Tuttlingen, Germany: Michael Birk, [c. 1890s]. Quarto. Original limp cloth wrappers blocked in gilt, grey, black, and white, blue endpapers, blue top-stain. 15 double-sided leaves of chromolithographic, metallic-printed, and embossed designs, of which 6 are folding, engravings throughout the other 290 pages. Minor bumps at the corners. A superb, fresh copy in unused condition with many of the leaves unopened and still delicately adhering to each other at the edges. A superb, unused Art Nouveau chromolithographic catalogue issued by the German pharmaceutical and medical supply firm Michael Birk, probably in the 1890s. This remarkable, 320 page catalogue catalogue contains 15 double-sided plates of elaborate chromolithographic, metallic, and embossed designs for product labels, as well as another 290 pages advertising an incredible array of other products. Description:
1597 Poetry of Oppian Greco-Roman FISHING & Hunting Commodus Greek Plantin RAREOppian of Anazarbus, or simply Oppian, was a 2nd-century Greek poet who is only remembered for his Greek poems on fishing and hunting. Of his surviving works, his poem on fishing (De piscatu) is his most important, much in part because it was dedicated to Marcus Aurelius and Commodus.
This 1597 edition of the poems of Oppian includes two major poems - the expected poem on fishing and the other on hunting. However, it should be noted that the Oppian named as the author of the hunting poem is Oppian of Syria. According to scholars, Oppian of Syria was familiar with the hunting poem of Oppian of Anazarbus and wrote his poem as a supplement to the former.
Regardless of the authorship, this late 16th-century work is a fascinating and desirable piece on Ancient Roman leisure activities and outdoors sport. Edited and translated with commentary by Konrad Rittershausen, this printing features both Latin and Greek texts in… Read More

1673 JanuaLinguarum CZECH Comenius Linguistics Dictionary ENGLISH & Latin RARE"Every educational reformer owes much, in the way of inspiration and suggestion, to his predecessors, and of none is this truer than of John Amos Comenius."
– Will S. Monroe, Comenius and the Beginnings of Educational Reform"
Shortly after 'JanuaLinguarumReserata' was first published in1629, it was translated into nearly every European language. In fact, by the 1630s, it was the second most read book in Europe, second only to the Bible. This textbook by Johann Amos Comenius was simply a text of Language, as the English title suggests, "The Door of Languages Unlocked."
'Janua' comprehends the elements of all the sciences and arts – from the origin of words to the mind and its faculties." (Monroe, 126).

1680 1ed Scottish Morison BOTANY Plantarum Plants Classification Science FOLIOSRobert Morison was a 17th-century Scottish botanist best-known for his book 'Plantarum Umbelliferarum Distributio Nova'. This book was an enormous work and one of best books of botany from the 17th-century. The successes of the 1672 'Plantarum' propelled Morison to write 'Plantarum Universalis Oxoniensis', which became his magnum opus. Sadly, Morison was never able to finish this work before his death. This book was written to describe fifteen classes of his botanical classification system. A second (or third overall volume) was published later to include the final sections not covered in the first tome.

1695 1ed FAMED Robert Boyle Against Swearing Cursing Oaths Philosophy Anger RAREWhile mostly known for his contributions to natural philosophy and science, Robert Boyle was highly interested in theology, devoting much of his time to studying the existence of God, using his philosophical and even scientific discoveries as evidence. One of his many important treatises was his "Against Swearing and Cursing" – a discussion on the sins of cursing, dealing with anger, agreeing to and breaking oaths, and admissions of guilt.
The 'Printing and the Mind of Man' calls Boyle
"the best-known English scientist of his day, and the greatest experimental scientist of the mid-17th-century." (PMM 141).

New York: Lyle Stuart, 1965. First edition. Fine, bright copy with the original printed wraparound band (partly torn) and just the slightest of rubbing to the extremities.. 4to, 101pp; original wrappers. One of a stated 3100 copies in the edition, signed and dated by Bukowski at the colophon. As with all Loujon Press productions, the book is marked by a whimsical style using multi-colored papers of varying stocks and even sizes. Loujon proprietors Jon and Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb were important early supporters of Bukowski, especially in their short-lived periodical "The Outsider". This book, along with their earlier Bukowski title, It Catches My Heart in its Hands, helped put him on the map early in his career and bring him to the attention of a literary audience that has continued to grow. An exceptionally fresh copy.

New York: Lyle Stuart Inc.,, 1965. Signed by Bukowski First edition, signed limited issue, one of 3,100, this copy signed by Bukowski in silver and dated "03/10/65". A "painstakingly pruned selection" (front flap), Crucifix in a Deathhand "was the biggest book of Bukowoski's career to date, and the Webbs did another beautiful design job. Printed in a large format, and illustrated with nightmarish etchings by Noel Rockmore, it looked like an album of Gothic fairy tales" (Sounes). Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb and her husband were publishers of The Outsider literary magazine, which often featured Bukowski's poetry. Under the Loujon Press imprint, which designed, edited, and printed this title, they "did not just print books, they hand-pressed literary art objects on massive old presses that took up their entire living space. Pages came in myriad colours, textures, and typesets" (Welch). This was their second Bukowski book, following on the heels of It Catches My Heart in Its Hands (1963). Large octavo.…
