Interestingly, there is a one page advertisement between the two: "Catalogue des livres nouvelles imprimees chez Pierre Mortier. Tightly bound. Full Leather binding is intact, but needs treatment (appropriate oils/leather treatments? mostly on the spine). Pages are foxed, but supple (remarkably well preserved for something that has existed for more than 300 years).

Salmon and published by Aphonse Lemerre in 1884. This collection of etchings was produced to accompany the newly published edition. The customer could have their book rebound incorporating these etchings or simply have them kept together with their new edition. Extremely rare first edition in exceptional near fine condition in elegant contemporary (circa 1850) private binding. The author of this first comprehensive treatise on administration was a prominent French lawyer and politician of the mid-19th Century. A member of the Chambre des Députés, his book is based on a two-part article he contributed to the Revue des Deux Mondes 1841. It appears that most copies of this first edition were destroyed by fire. A second, enlarged edition appeared in 1852 in 2 vols.

Publicité du photographe au dos. Rare photographie de Victor Hugo dans sa maison de Hauteville, dans le fameux salon rouge Renaissance, la pièce préférée de l'écrivain, entièrement conçue par lui. On y voit l'écrivain assis, la main droite dans son gilet. De la pièce on peut voir le grand lustre à gaz, 4 sculptures porte-torchères et un miroir dans le fond. Au début de l'été 1878, Victor Hugo fait une attaque d'apoplexie à Paris et rejoint Hauteville pour sa convalescence durant les mois d'été. Le photographe André prendra alors de lui plusieurs clichés à Hauteville ; l'intérêt de ces photographies est qu'elles ne sont pas des photographies de studio. Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.)
