On joint le livre publié (Libourne, Arts graphiques d'Aquitaine, 1978, 24 ff. n. ch., ill. noir et couleurs). Ce sont des anges, indiscutablement. Mais non certes de l'espèce préraphaélite, exsangue, asexuée, chlorotique. Des quatre vertus cardinales de l'ancienne théologie, c'est à coup sûr la force qu'ils cultivent avec prédilection.....

Typed letter signed by western artist Frank Tenney Johnson on his personal stationary with his New York address embossed at top. Letter was in answer to a woman who had written the artist about a painting she had purchased, "a night scene of three Indians on horses". He tells her where he saw and painted these Indians and made mention that the painting had been exhibited at the Salmagundi Club of New York City and was sold there but he could not remember who purchased. Framed under glass. Provenance: Joseph Sartor Galleries Dallas, Texas. and Owings and Dewy Fine Art, N.M. A fine letter.

Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 170 page manuscript. Contemporary half speckled sheep, marbled sides. Several contemporary sheets of manuscript with mathematical notations loosely inserted. Corners repaired, a little wear and some discolouration to boards, endpapers tanned, contents with the occasional light spot but overall quite clean. Very good condition. An elegant, substantial early-19th century manuscript containing practical mathematical and astronomical problems likely produced by a student of navigation. The majority of the text is from John Bonnycastle''s A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, originally published in 1806. Bonnycastle was a respected mathematics teacher who tutored the children of the aristocracy and taught at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. A man of "considerable classical and general literary culture", he was a great friend of Fuseli and also of Leigh Hunt, who included Bonnycastle in his book Lord Byron and Some of His Contemporaries.… Read More

Original holograph musical score for the unpublished SONATA FOR ORGAN, by 20th-century American composer John Stewart McLennan, Jr. (1903-1996). McLennan was the son of the Canadian senator of the same name (1853-1939) and the American writer Grace Seeley Henop Tytus McLennan (1875-1928). He was born in Tyringham, Massachusetts, at Ashintully, his maternal family's estate. He acquired that property in 1937 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He is considered the first Italian-American mayor of a major city in the United States. Interesting manuscript by a professional calligrapher and practical mathematician dedicated to the Prussian senator and senator of the town of Saltzwedel Wilhelm Erdmann gewidmet. The principle idea enclosed in this small treatise could well be used to encode text. A fine copy.

Original mimeograph sheets containing James Burnham's (1905-1987) resignation from the Workers Party together with a response from the Party's Political Committee. The Workers Party was born out of prolonged factional infighting within the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), and was organized in 1940 when Burnham, Max Shachtman, and other Trotskyists (estimated at forty percent of the SWP membership) resigned from the SWP in opposition to the Soviet invasion of Finland and the USSR's direction under Stalin. Although Burnham supported the split, his alliance with Trotsky and Trotskyism, which dated back to the early 1930s, was in its final stage. Throughout his years as a Trotskyist, Burnham had sought to formulate an "American approach" to Marxism capable of addressing American, as opposed to European, causes and concerns. London: By the Author, 1887. First edition. 8vo. 213pp. Original maroon cloth titled and decorated in gilt, white and blue to spine and front board. Some cracking in places to the cloth of the spine, with a square flake of loss affecting the title at the head of the spine. Minor scuffing and shelfwear, light bumping to extremities, a strong and solid copy with some cosmetic problems. Internally clean, glazed brown endpapers, rather opulent altogether for a self published title. Inscribed by the author to James Lancaster Pollitt on the verso of the front flyleaf, at the American Exhibition in London in 1887 where Brown had her Norse Exhibit. The American Exhibition that year was notable for the appearance of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show. The book is also annotated throughout in pencil, although the vagaries of late 19th century handwriting mean that the notes could be those of Brown, Pollitt, or a later owner. Rebound from a broken binding as a folding leporello series of maps in cloth covered boards "Bible Atlas S.R.T." on original label to the front. Binding is new and without flaws. Slight scratch to blank (back) of first map, otherwise the maps are in excellent condition. London, 1837. Addressed to an unidentified recipient, this signed letter concerns the appointment of an officer with hearing loss, which the Duke relates to his own experience of deafness. Like many exposed to the sound of artillery fire, the Duke of Wellington suffered from noise-related hearing loss. Subsequently he underwent a botched treatment which resulted in permanent deafness in one ear. This ALS is dated London, 16 April 1837. This was the year that Queen Victoria ascended the throne, and was written when the Duke was in his late 60s. Expected fold marks. Whole written in brown ink. 2pp. with integral blank leaf. 185 x 118 mm (7¼ by 4¾ inches)
