Gays highly successful ballad opera, satirizing popular Italian opera was an immediate triumph, and ran for a record 62 consecutive performances at the Theatre Royal where it premiered in January 1728. The first edition, printed earlier the same year, had 16 pages of engraved music at the end. Here, the music is printed in the text in woodcut. This is complicated so bear with me. This is a sammelband (collection) of four titles from the publisher Muir. Listed in order of binding: First title "Life of Thomas Paine" (1833) is not attributed but appears to be abridged Sherwin's biography of Paine (See OCLC: 933006301). Second title "Rights of Man" (1833) requires no explanation. Next two titles written by Peter MacKenzie are rare and make up most of the value. Third title "Exposure of the Spy System" is the 1832 first edition of this work. Includes frontis of Hardie's grave. The fourth (final) title "Trial of James Wilson" is the 1832 first edition. The whole thing paginates: 48, viii, 104, [2], 242, 48. Bound in high quality quarter leather with marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Defects are: page 21/22 of "Rights" has a repaired hole affecting a few words (see scan); list of Paine's works has some check marks; title page of "Spy" has small edge tear not affecting anything. New York: New York Committee for the General Strike for Peace, 1961-1963. A collection of nine rare leaflets and letters concerning the General Strike for Peace, which in the early 1960s sought a ban on the testing of nuclear weapons as well as global disarmament. This material belonged to Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004), poet, performance artist, and peace activist.Eight of these items were issued by the New York Committee for the General Strike for Peace, for which Mac Low was one of the organizers. (Julian Beck and Judith Malina of the Living Theatre were also organizers.) The collection also includes a letter from the Committee for Nonviolent Action. 12mo. 108 pages. Boston: Published by the Society, 1836. First Edition. (American Imprints 36307; Sabin 11994). The second annual report of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society. Report includes an account of the obstacles to its founding and events at its first meeting, at which William Lloyd Garrison was arrested. Also containing a letter from Lydia Maria Child. At the conclusion are several poems and hymns, including ones by Chapman and Bernard Barton. Maria Weston Chapman was a founding member of the Society, and was closely associated with Lucretia Mott, Lydia Maria Child and the New England abolitionists. At the end of November 1803, the Teyler's Religious Society in Haarlem organized a competition. A treatise was to be prepared on the question, "What service have missionaries done to the propagation of true Christianity in the past two centuries, and what fruit is there been to expected from the present active missionary societies in this regard?". This is one of the best examples of this first edition volume to be found today. It is a fine book with a small tear in the cover on the spine. It does have a mylar cover and the original cover is otherwise exquisite. It is complete. I purchased this book in 2000 from a collector.
