1728. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Fine. With A Table of 69 Songs; Overture Compos'd by Dr. Pepusch; typographic music throughout the text; plus woodcut head- and tailpieces. 8vo. Full speckled calf, gilt ruled, spine with 2 gilt lettering-pieces; aeg; by Rivière & Sons. London: John Watts, 1728. Second Edition. The first expanded edition to include the music printed in the text. Gays highly successful ballad opera, satirizing popular Italian opera was an immediate triumph, and ran for a record 62 consecutive performances at the Theatre Royal where it premiered in January 1728. The first edition, printed earlier the same year, had 16 pages of engraved music at the end. Here, the music is printed in the text in woodcut. It features such memorable low-life characters as Polly Peachum, Jemmy Twitcher, Filch and Sukey Tawdry. For some lyrics, Gay borrowed from Allan Ramsays Gentle Shepherd. The music was composed by the German born Johann Christoph Pepusch, a contemporary of George Frederick Handel. It… Read More

Description:
This is complicated so bear with me. This is a sammelband (collection) of four titles from the publisher Muir. Listed in order of binding: First title "Life of Thomas Paine" (1833) is not attributed but appears to be abridged Sherwin's biography of Paine (See OCLC: 933006301). Second title "Rights of Man" (1833) requires no explanation. Next two titles written by Peter MacKenzie are rare and make up most of the value. Third title "Exposure of the Spy System" is the 1832 first edition of this work. Includes frontis of Hardie's grave. The fourth (final) title "Trial of James Wilson" is the 1832 first edition. The whole thing paginates: 48, viii, 104, [2], 242, 48. Bound in high quality quarter leather with marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Defects are: page 21/22 of "Rights" has a repaired hole affecting a few words (see scan); list of Paine's works has some check marks; title page of "Spy" has small edge tear not affecting anything. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you… Read More

New York: New York Committee for the General Strike for Peace, 1961-1963. A collection of nine rare leaflets and letters concerning the General Strike for Peace, which in the early 1960s sought a ban on the testing of nuclear weapons as well as global disarmament. This material belonged to Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004), poet, performance artist, and peace activist.Eight of these items were issued by the New York Committee for the General Strike for Peace, for which Mac Low was one of the organizers. (Julian Beck and Judith Malina of the Living Theatre were also organizers.) The collection also includes a letter from the Committee for Nonviolent Action. The General Strike for Peace consisted of three different phases, the first of which took place in early 1962, followed by additional calls to strike in November 1962 and then again in May 1963. On January 29, 1962, more than 300 people marched down Fifth Avenue in New York calling for a worldwide general strike for peace. The New York Times was there:… Read More

Rage against missions: a landmark anti-colonialist treatise
Haarlem, Joh. Enschedé en Zoonen & J. van Walré, 1807.
4°. [4], X, [2], 27, [1 blank], 296 pp. With two engraved medallions on the first title-page.
First edition of a landmark Dutch anti-colonialist and anti-missionary treatise. This controversial and heavily criticized work marks a shift in thinking about the Western influence around the world. It is a rare work and here in excellent. Only a few copies are recorded in libraries outside The Netherlands.
At the end of November 1803, the Teyler's Religious Society in Haarlem organized a competition. A treatise was to be prepared on the question, "What service have missionaries done to the propagation of true Christianity in the past two centuries, and what fruit is there been to expected from the present active missionary societies in this regard?". On November 30, 1804, Haafner's manuscript of 195 pages arrived. This turned out to be the only entry, making it inevitable to crown him the… Read More

Description:
1736 BIBLE & BANNED Commentary Jansenism Catholic 8v Pasquier Quesnel French
Pasquier Quesnel was a 17th-century French Jansenist best-remembered for his commentary on the New Testament. This commentary was written to push Jansenist theology and doctrine which, unfortunately, seemed to form numerous phrases that were considered heretical by the Catholic Church. This French edition of the New Testament includes Quesnel's commentary, published in eight tomes.

Artist book in the "International mail art event and simultaneous exhibitions in three cities--NYC, Denver, Seattle." Presented in 1990 with Women's Studio Workshop (NY) in an edition of 60, "distributed to 50 people around the world in the fields of politics, art, the media, science, education, and religion who held positions on both sides" (Sollod Studio, 2023).
A unique and provocative piece of American political history, art activism, third-wave feminism, and the continued struggle for human rights and reproductive freedom. Owned by a selection of world leaders and policy and public-opinion influencers* (see the complete distribution list below), this artifact is scarcely offered for purchase. As relevant now as ever, this exceptionally rare volume is an exhilarating addition to any collection.
This is the signed artist's proof. Twenty-four accordion-fold leaves bound in cloth cover boards. Lithography, relief, and hand-coloring printing methods with Bembo typeface on Rives heavyweight paper.
