Description:
First edition of this rare publication, in which an attempt is made to "clear away the difficulties that were previously seen in the creation story described by Moses" (transl. from the preface). Johann Georg Klein, a preacher from Strasbourg (Meusel, Das gelehrte Teutschland, vol. 1, Lemgo 1824), wanted to produce nothing less than a "New System of Creation" with his work. He had previously published writings on baptism and the Lord's Supper, a "Warning against false prophets," a "History of the Revelation of John," etc. What is remarkable about this publication is that the circle diagrams are not merely illustrations of the text, but conversely the texts serve as descriptions or explanations of the individual panels. The reference points of this creation story based on circular diagrams are unmistakable, although unnamed, i.e. those medieval, richly illustrated manuscripts in which God the Father is depicted with a compass creating the microcosm and macrocosm in concentric circles (according to the… Read More

Description:
[Bordeaux, ca. first quarter of the 19th century?]. Oblong octavo album with 58 tipped in pen & ink drawings, 55 of them using a combination of detailed landscapes, architecture, interiors, and stick figures to depict various scenes from classical times, the Bible, and European history, accompanied by 8 pages of a manuscript, titled "Explications des dessins-Énigmes," being a key to the illustrations and describing the moments depicted, in French. Contemporary cloth backed boards, sewing weak but holding, mounted paper with some occasional spotting but the illustrations largely fine, text gathering toned with some shallow chipping but no loss to text. From the library of Apollonie de la Rochelambert (1803-1893). From our colleague Nina Musinsky who was as baffled by this as we are: "The work of a single anonymous artist, the drawings show the stick figures in action within villages, cityscapes, well-defined landscapes, or interiors. Overall, our draftsman paid careful attention to architectural and… Read More

Angela Dorian: movie and television star, actress, model, singer, dancer, songwriter, poet, waitress, alcoholic, addict, and convicted felon. An extraordinary archive of the 1968 Playboy Playmate of the Year, and Hollywood B-movie actress, consisting primarily of journals and letters, interspersed with poetry, drawings, doodles and extra-illustration (approximately 7,500 pages, and approx. 1.25 million words) which give a rare and intimate picture of a woman whose promising career was derailed by abuse, exploitation and violence. This is Victoria Vetri's first-hand account detailing her life in the Hollywood scene, the drug abuse, the relationships, and the unsettling night-life of a renowned sex symbol during two-and-a-half decades of the 20th century, and the first decade of the 21st. The journals span more than 45 years, (there are two gaps in the journals, totaling 15 years) and the daily entries are infused, if… Read More
