Description:
Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova… Read More

Description:
One of 300 copies of rare signed edition of Martyn Zadeka by influential exiled Russian writer Alexey Remizov - inscribed to his patroness Barbara Church, widow of Henry Church. Remizov was a symbolist-modernist writer who was a surrealist "avant la lettre." He was much admired by luminaries of the Parisian literary world including the editor of the Nouvelle Revue Française French Academicien Jean Paulhan and James Joyce. His works failed to find a publisher from 1931 to 1952. In 1953, devotees of his works founded a small publishing house so that his writings could see the light of day. A number of works were published between 1952 and 1957 in limited numbers. "It has been largely overlooked that the textual emancipation of dreams is a process that began much earlier than the surrealist "revolution" of the 1920s. A key figure in this respect is the Russian writer Aleksei Remizov, whose first dream recordings antedate the surrealists by two decades. The goal of this article will be to determine the… Read More

Description:
Original exceedingly rare Russian Language 1st (Pirate) Edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Meets all the issue points for the true 1st Edition - "Roman" to title page, 634 pages, publishers imprint in cyrillic, and 2 page introduction (lacking from later Russian editions). Unusually tight, bright, Very Good condition, with no inscriptions and only light toning to closed page edges. Several gatherings are unevenly browned as usual, due to differing paper stocks used in printing. Issued without a dust-jacket.The publication of the Russian text of Doctor Zhivago was attended by odd circumstances. It first appeared in a 'pirated' (or possibly semi-authorised) edition, a short time before Feltrinelli's official edition came out in Milan. The 'pirated' version, however, bore Feltrinelli's imprint and were produced by Mouton, the reputable firm of Dutch printers with whom he was negotiating, and to whom he had sent the manuscript. Declassified documents reveal that the CIA sought to embarrass the… Read More

From there he worked with his fellow Futurists, now writing in Ukrainian and writing prose and poetry. He was part of the Nova Heneratsiya and Avangard group activities in Kharkiv until his death. His work was withdrawn and banned in 1934 and much of his work only released after 1992. With a fine constructivist cover by Pavel Liubarskii (1891-1970), graphic designer from Khabarovsk who allied with Futurists while studying in Moscow, then returning to the Russian Far East where he collaborated in the productions of Taifun and Tvorchestvo journals, issuing expressionist prints and holding exhibitions.
