Lee's debut novel became an immediate bestseller and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It is "an authentic and nostalgic story which in rare fashion at once puts together the tenderness and the tragedy of the South. They are the inseparable ingredients of a region much reported but seldom so well understood" (jacket). The first issue jackets have, as here, the Truman Capote blurb printed in green on the front flap and the Jonathan Daniels blurb on the rear flap. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed brown boards, spine lettered in brown. With dust jacket. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco solander box. Loosely inserted contemporary newspaper clipping reviewing the work. Ownership signature of one Hilda Kelne on front free endpaper. Negligible bump to fore edge and upper corners, foxing to toned edges and endpapers, offsetting to pp. 82-3 from newspaper cutting, contents otherwise clean. A very good copy in rubbed and foxed dust jacket, not price-clipped, shallow chips to fold ends, short closed tear at centre of front flap fold with tape repair, damp staining to head of rear panel, still a bright example of a jacket prone to fading.
