Tropic Of Cancer

By Miller, Henry

Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer is one of the most notoriously and frequently censored books in the history of American literature. In a combination of autobiography and fiction, the novel centers of Miller’s own life as a struggling writer in France — namely Paris — in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Tropic of Cancer is written in first person and lacks linear organization, two of Miller’s most favored techniques. Some chapters are narratives about Miller’s friends and work places, and others are stream-of-consciousness-style reflections, but all of the chapters touch on the sexual exploits and general low-life ruthlessness in which the author had engaged at the time.

Tropic of Cancer was first published by Obelisk Press, a French publisher of soft pornography, in Paris in 1934. Shortly thereafter, the novel was banned in the US and later tried for charges of obscenity, a trial which challenged American pornography laws the time. In 1961, the ban of Tropic of Cancer was lifted and later that year, Grove Press published the first US edition of the novel, but only after the firm’s Barney Rosset offered Miller a sizeable advance and promised to defend the author in any future legal battles regarding the publication. Grove Press’s edition of Tropic of Cancer sold over 1 million copies by the end of 1961… and was the subject of about 60 lawsuits as well, one of which involved the American Civil Liberties Union.

All of this hullabaloo makes one wonder what the reactions might have been if Miller had decided to go with the novel’s working title, Crazy Cock — which was, ironically, far more modest than the published version. Regardless, the novel’s 1970 film adaptation, directed by Joseph Strick, received an X rating (meaning no one 17 and under admitted). Today, Tropic of Cancer finds itself ranked 50th on Modern Library’s “100 Best” English-language novels of the 20th century and 59th on The Guardian’s list of the 100 best novels.

First edition identification and notes

Obelisk Press first published Tropic of Cancer in Paris in 1934. True first editions states “First Published September 1934” on the copyright page. Maurice Girodias, who would later become famous as the leading French publisher of erotic literature, designed the artwork of the novel’s soft cover, featuring a giant crab holding a naked woman in its pinchers. With an original print run of 1,000 copies, first editions of Tropic of Caner are rare. Signed copies have sold for upwards of $10,000.

Other collectible or notable editions

Grove Press published the first US edition of Tropic of Cancer in 1961. The 100 numbered copies of the limited issue release state “First Printing” on the copyright page as well as the original price of $7.50 on the dust jacket. Signed copies of this edition have sold for upwards of $2,000.

…But before the first US edition was the first pirated American edition. In 1940, Medusa published Tropic of Cancer, printing then novel in Mexico and then illegally distributing it in the US. Bound in green cloth, signed copies of this edition have sold for upwards of $1,500.

Paris: The Obelisk Press, 1939. Softcover. Very Good. Fifth printing. Printed self-wrappers. Pages browned, a modest tear on the front wrap and first leaf, a nice and pleasing, very good copy with no restoration. Miller's best known work, an acknowledged classic detailing with then-unprecedented sexual candor his expatriate experience in Paris. It was banned for decades in the United States. The first edition consisted of 1000 copies, the next four printings were 500 copies each, so this is one of the first 3000 copies. Because of the fragile binding, early editions are usually found in poor condition. Very scarce.

TROPIC OF CANCER

Miller Henry

New York: Grove Press, 1961. First authorized and first trade edition issued in America. With a long introduction by Karl Shapiro and a preface by Anais Nin. 8vo., publisher's original cloth backed boards in dustjacket. xxxiii, 318 pp. A handsome, clean and pleasing copy, some light evidence of age or shelving to the dustjacket, the book very fine. FIRST AUTHORIZED AND FIRST TRADE EDITION ISSUED IN AMERICA. Of the book, John Ciardi said, [it] "is a substantial work of art. The violence of Miller's attack on orthodoxy and falseness is indispensable to his human vision of things. In [the book] the test is ferocity, a ferocious and yet naive sincerity that castigates all sham. It cannot fail to be moral finally, because the ferocity is radically moral. And because the author is an artist--a very good one, as the continued 'underground life' of the book attests." Ours is a very nice copy of this classic.

Miller, Henry.

Paris: The Obelisk Press, January 1939. 8vo (19.3 cm, 7.6"). [1-6], 7-[318], [2] pp. Fifth Obelisk printing of the book that "afforded [Miller] his literary voice" (Shifreen & Jackson).     "I start tomorrow on the Paris book: first person, uncensored, formless — fuck everything!" So wrote Miller to Emil Schnellock in 1931. Three years later, after some financial difficulty, Jack Kahane published Tropic of Cancer at Obelisk in Paris with money Anaïs Nin borrowed from a psychoanalyst. It is the story of Miller's first year in Paris, living hand-to-mouth as a struggling writer.     This edition is the same as the fourth edition in all but wrappers (and the same as the third in pagination, except for necessary variations on the copyright page: "Fifth printing" and "Reprinted January 1939"); our copy's => binding is blue and white, lettered in black, not the light green wrappers lettered in darker green called for by Shifreen & Jackson.     Jack Kahane founded the Obelisk Press at Paris in 1929 to publish illicit English-language books like this free from legal censure.          Shifreen & Jackson A9h. Binding as above; wrappers faded and creased along the spine, upper joints cracking. A copy that clearly was read more than a few times.

MILLER, Henry

New York: Grove Press, 1961. Hardcover. 8vo. Dark grey cloth spine with silver lettering and blue textured paper over boards, dust jacket. xxxiii, 318pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket mildly edgeworn. Poet Karl Shapiro provides the introduction ("The Greatest Living Author") and Anais Nin (who helped edit the book) the preface to this tight, attractive third printing of the first trade edition -- with choice and appropriate autograph addition: Front flyleaf bears a fine, archival, decorative-edged bookplate boldly signed in black fineline "Sincerely / Elmer Gertz." Gertz (1902-2000), known as "The Clarence Darrow of Chicago," was a controversial defense attorney who defended Miller, Lee Harvey Oswald's murderer Jack Ruby, notorious child murderer Nathan Leopold and other high-profile cases. When Grove Press published this edition dozens of obscenity lawsuits in many states followed against those booksellers who carried the book. Gertz successfully defended Miller in a suit that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1964 and resulted in the lifting of the ban, and the two became fast friends. A sharp and unusual copy.
