Illustrator: Various Contemporary. 450 grammes; 96 pages, list of illustrations, acknowledgements, introduction by selector, notes and notes to the songs. The text is illustrated with contemporary illustrations. Brown coloured boards with gilt writing on the spine. Printed on brownish stock. Illustrated dust wrapper, showing a contemporary illustration " The Frisky Vocalist ", with yellow background and maroon and black writing on the front panel and spine. Trivial handling marks to the dustjacket. All in all very good copy. The Music Hall was founded on the Song and Supper Rooms of Regency and early Victorian London. In these rooms, young men about town would shout out their favourite songs -- usually bawdy parodies of popular ballads of the time. The mid Victorian morality decried these songs and so the paper records were burnt. There appeared that no record of the songs had survived… Read More
