Shaker Heights was an early example of a planned community. Incorporated in 1911, the village was built on the site of the Center Family North Union Society of Shakers by a syndicate formed by the Van Sweringen Brothers. Building lots were sold with a requirement that every house be designed by an architect. Houses are grouped by architect, and shown in color photographs with a brief description.
