Description:
English 1994. Lace is a decorative fabric that evolved in response to developments in furnishing and dress. This exhibition is presented with discussions of the lace that is pictured in portraits, as well as actual examples of lace. Origins and development of particular types of work such as drawn-thread, cut holes, open geometric cutwork, tiny projecting points, free needle lace, metal thread, bobbin lace, and more, are discussed in relation to influences from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Links between other decorative arts, such as woven silk, are compared. Personal taste as well as financial and social status dictated what lace an individual chose to wear; consequently the lace shown in the portraits at Frederiksborg Castle can help to complete our understanding of the sitters., English, Year1994, Illust.
