About the author

Samuel T. Gladding is chair of and a professor in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He holds degrees from Wake Forest University (B.A., M.A.), Yale (M.A.), and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Ph.D.). He has served as a counselor in both public and private settings and is a fellow in the American Counseling Association and its former president (2004-2005). Gladding has served as president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW), and Chi Sigma Iota (international counseling honor society). He is former the chair of the American Counseling Association Foundation and a member of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. He is also the former editor of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work.

Gladding has authored numerous professional publications, including over three dozen books, which have been translated into Russian, Polish, Indonesian, Turkish, and Chinese. In 1999, he was cited as being in the top 1% of contributors to the Journal of Counseling and Development (the flagship journal of the American Counseling Association). A National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), and a Licensed Professional Counselor (North Carolina), his special interests in counseling are theory development, family therapy, group work, clinical mental health, and creativity. A Fulbright Specialist, Gladding has taught counseling and consulted with universities in Turkey, Estonia, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Mexico, China, Sweden, South Africa and Canada. He has been married to his wife, Claire, for 27 years. They are the parents of three young adult men. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, writing poetry, listening to music, and reading humor and history.
