About this book

Partially based upon the life of Oakland entrepreneur "Borax" Smith, Burning Daylight was Jack London's best selling book during his lifetime. The novel is set in the Yukon Territory in 1893, telling the story of an adventurer, nicknamed “Burning Daylight,” who went to Alaska and laid the foundations of his fortune before the gold hunters arrived. Burning Daylight was adapted for American films in 1914, 1920, 1928, and 2010.

From the publisher

(LARGE PRINT EDITION) 1910. American writer (real name John Griffith London). London grew up in poverty, earning a living through various legal and illegal means. He was a sailor and took part in the Klondike gold rush. These experiences provided much of the material for his works and contributed to his becoming a socialist. Burning Daylight was London's best selling book during his lifetime. The book begins on the Klondike, as the hero-nicknamed Burning Daylight-becomes the most successful entrepreneur during the Alaskan Gold Rush. Having achieved fame and fortune, he heads to the States looking for new worlds to conquer. But, he's cheated out of his fortune by the crooks of Wall Street. Taking a page from their book, he too becomes a scoundrel when it comes to doing business. His travels then take him to California where he sees potential in the town of Oakland. He buys property, sets up utilities and public transportation systems through overbearing and shady tactics. He becomes self-indulgent with drink and food. And then, for the first time, he falls in love. The story ends with the moral of how a good woman can turn a bad man around. Adventure, dirty business deals and love wrapped into one good read.
