Description:
The United States wanted to control France after WW2. Charles DeGaulle, charismatic leader of the Free French movement in London appeared too strong and independent for FDR's preference in this regard. Hence. FDR tried to torpedo DeGaulle's plan to lead France after the war, and replace him with a puppet regime. DeGaulle thwarted this strategy, but never forgave the Americans for trying to dump him. This is the history of his strained relationship with successive US Presidents, as DeGaulle rose to power in 1958 as President of France, and afterwards.
