Das Herzogtum Kurland, 1561 aus Resten des livlndischen Ordensstaates entstanden und 1795 untergegangen, nimmt in seiner Entwicklung - deutscher Herzog und deutscher Adel, lettische Bauernschaft, polnisch-litauischer Lehnsherr und russische Zaren als Garanten der Adelsprivilegien - unter den Territorialherrschaften der Frhen Neuzeit eine Sonderstellung ein. Der Kampf um die Vorherrschaft zwischen Herzog und Ritterschaft, der von den rivalisierenden Nachbarmchten Schweden, Polen-Litauen und Russland stark beeinflusst wurde, prgte die gesamte Geschichte des Herzogtums. Er sucht in der deutschen Verfassungsgeschichte seinesgleichen, doch hat er in der jngeren Diskussion zum Absolutismus kaum Beachtung gefunden. Die vorliegende Edition schwer zugnglicher Quellen erffnet einen neuen Zugang zur Geschichte dieses ebenso eigenartigen wie interessanten Herzogtums.
