About This Item

Original lengthy handwritten ALS dated Monday 24 Sept 1828. From M. Waters to General Sir Herbert Taylor (Military secretary and adc to the Duke, First Private Secretary to King George III, King George IV and King William IV). An important letter regarding subscriptions to erect a monument in memory of "the lamented Duke of York" who has been "has been falsely and shamefully traduced by the Catholic Leaders for his constitutional, candid & manly opposition to any further concessions being allowed them", and "for his resolute declaration to uphold the principles which placed the desired House of Brunswick on the Throne". Also referring to a Madame des Mallet. Good condition, with edge toning/creasing, and browning to folds/edges. Includes a typed transcript by a previous owner (with speculation over the identity of Madame des Mallet including whether she might have been a mistress to the Duke of Kent).

Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (16 August 1763 – 5 January 1827); second son of King George III. Mocked, perhaps unfairly, in the rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York": The towering Duke of York Column on Waterloo Place, just off The Mall, London was completed in 1834 as a memorial to Prince Frederick.
