About This Item
[London:] Novello, Ewer & Co., Printers, [1882]. Near fine with trifle wear.
Two items. Dinner menu (card, 6¼ x 4¼ inches) and dance card (bifolium, 3¾ x 2½ inches) for a prize ceremony of London Irish Rifles at St. James Hall in London, December 20, 1882. The unit was founded in 1859 as reserve infantry regiment in the British Army. By the time of this ceremony and dinner/dance, the London Irish Rifles had been re-formed as the 16th Middlesex (London Irish) Rifle Volunteer Corps. The unit's honorary colonel, Prince Arthur (Duke of Connaught), presented the prizes. An elaborate dinner followed, as seen in the French-language menu. The dance program notes 17 dances and lists the evening's Stewards and M.C.s; music provided by the York House Quadrille Band.
