About This Item

Australian Scholarly, Melbourne, 2019. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Illustrator: Photographic. Acknowledgements, introduction by John lack, 1919, A Chronology and list of contributors. Plaintext paperback binding with dark blue and white coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the back strip. After "the wars end all wars" finished there was hope that 1919 would be the year of recovery. Instead, the Spanish flu pandemic killed more people than the Great War itself; the huge loss of life gave rise to fears of national decay; the soldiers returning home were often ill and sometimes restive and radical and not to mention violent; race riots occurred across the world as did prolonged industrial disputes and political protests gave rise to the first stirrings of fascism. Then, the Versailles Peace Conference deteriorated with recriminations and squabblings over the spoils of war; and, the war machinery had demonstrated lethal abilities and was in the background. Nine historians look at this pivotal year – the year the world appeared to be falling apart. Rubbing of the book edges and panels with a little creasing to the top book corners. There are a few marks to the book covers – more to the rear than to the front panel. Size: Trade Paperback. [4], V - VIII, 149, [5] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
