Instead, the Spanish flu pandemic killed more people than the Great War itself; the huge loss of life gave rise to fears of national decay; the soldiers returning home were often ill and sometimes restive and radical and not to mention violent; race riots occurred across the world as did prolonged industrial disputes and political protests gave rise to the first stirrings of fascism. Then, the Versailles Peace Conference deteriorated with recriminations and squabblings over the spoils of war; and, the war machinery had demonstrated lethal abilities and was in the background.
