About This Item

(San Antonio: Southern Album Company), 1960. Hardcover. Very Good. 6.5" x 4" notebook kept by D.F. Wells, used for note taking while training with the United States Air Force in 1960. Notebook is very good with rubbing, years, and some toning. Roughly 65 pages of handwritten notes taken while undergoing training with the United States Air Force from January until May 1960. An early page states, "mission functions of the Air Force: gain and maintain air supremacy, to organize and equip the U.S. against air attacks, to maintain close combat support with the frontline forces, and develop weapons and tactics." Included are lessons on everything from first aid to how to write up a will; "the executor of a will should be a faithful friend." Wells draws detailed illustrations of missiles, "falcon," sidewinder," "genie," and "rascal," among others, all separated into categories such as "air to air" and "air to surface." Large sections of the notes focus on treating wounds and patients. These notes include: "four types of wounds: laceration, abrasion, incision, and puncture;" as well as how to transport wounded, and "lifesaver strategies." From these sections it is probable Wells was involved in studying for the medical side of the Corps. Throughout the book are drawings of large breasted women, illustrations for lectures, and pictures of military men and a chart of their ranks with insignia. There is also an extensive section on various punishments for crimes from not saluting an officer to going AWOL. An extensive look at the early stages of training for the Air Force pre-Vietnam.
