About This Item
1865. This two page hand-written report by J.M. Pierce for Captain Alanson W. Snyder from the Camp at Washington, D.C. After a list of ten being discharged, there are two important lists. The first is the list of deaths listing the names of those who died, the dates of their deaths, ranging from those who died at Andersonville, to those who died at camp hospitals, to one who died from drowning along with who died in Indiana. The second list is of those who died in battle at three locations most have never heard of (Nickjack Creek, Peechtree Creek, and Lick Skillet). Again each one lists the dates of their deaths. The condition is superb and fascinating to compare with Chaplain Daniel R. Lucas's History of the 99th Indiana Infantry (Lafayette, 1865). There are some differences from the printed version from this the original manuscript. For example, at least three of those noted in Lucas have the wrong state, also there are more detailed places in the document which in the printed record convert everything to Merrillville or Huntsville. In other words, this contemporary handwritten record gets the researcher closer to the facts which are changed considerably.
