About This Item

London: Various Printers 1815-1822, Various Editions. (Leatherbound) Very good. NOTE: Please enquire for full description. Though bound in one volume, this is a lengthy description of all 26 titles. Many online databases cut descriptions short. - 16mo volume. Half-leather over marbled boards; spine simple-ruled in gilt. Boards notably rubbed, leather rubbed. Ffep torn at head of gutter. 26 individual tracts bound into one volume. Certainly bound together at a later date, since each tract has varying type-setting, some margins appear trimmed, issue numbers not in any sequential order, and publication dates do not follow chronologically. Internally, each tract is relatively clean; some with light dust dirtying. Free of any underlining, highlighting, marginalia, or any other such blemishes. Engraved illustration vignette on most title pages. The first few tracts in this tome appear to be from the Religious Tract Society's "Books for the Young" (William Jones, Jubilee Memorial, pp123-127). The following tracts which are included in this volume, including printers, dates, pagination are: "The Dairyman's Daughter; an Authentic Narrative", No.118, c.1820(?), 48pp, printed by Augustus Applegath and Edward Cowper; "The Negro Servant; an Authentic and Interesting Narrative in Three Parts", No.119, c.1820(?), 24pp, printed by Augustus Applegath and Edward Cowper; "The Young Cottager; A True Story", No.151, c.1820(?), 48pp, printed by Augustus Applegath and Edward Cowper; "The Afflicted Family; an Authentic Narrative, in Two Parts", (no number), c.1820(?), 20pp, printed by J. Hill for Whittemore and Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part I", No.XV, 1820, 12pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part II", No.XVIII, 1820, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part III", No.XXXIII, 1821, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part IV", No.XXXIV, 1821, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part V", No.XXXV, 1821, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part VI", No.XXXVI, 1821, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "The Gardener of Glammis; Part VII", No.XXXVII, 1821, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "A Specimen of Weltch Eloquence: or an Extract from a Sermon by Rev. Christmas Evans", (no number), c.1820(?), 2pp, printed for J. Nisbet [damp staining to bottom corner of this title]; "Relics of My Father; Part I: the Philosophical Cobbler", No.VI, 1820, Stated Third Edition, 4pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "Relics of My Father; Part II", No.XII, 1820, Stated Second Edition, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "Relics of My Father; Part III", No.XIV, 1822, Stated Second Edition, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "Samson's Riddle", No.II, 1820, Stated Second Edition, 4pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "What a Change!; Part I", No.IV, 1820, Stated Third Edition, 4pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "What a Change!; Part II", No.V, 1820, Stated Third Edition, 4pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co., [faint damp staining to bottom corner of this title]; "The Gunpowder Plot", No.XVI, 1820, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "See Thou to That", No.XVII, 1820, 8pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "Difficulties Against Demonstrations! Who is the Gainer?", No.XIX, 1820, Stated Second Edition, 4pp, printed by Walker & Greig for William Whyte & Co.; "Never Man Spake Like This Man", No.III, 1820, Stated Third Edition, 4pp, printed by Oliver & Boyd for William Whyte & Co.; "A choice Drop of Honey from the Rock Christ; or, A Word of Advice to all Saints & Sinners", (no number), 1815, Stated New Edition, 24pp, printed by J. F. Dove for W. Baynes; "The Christian's Directory. / (Extracted from an Old Author)", No.165, 1820(?), 8pp, printed by Augustus Applegath and Edward Cowper; "The Christian Indeed (by the late Rev. J. Flavel)", No.68, c.1820(?), 16pp, printed by Cave & Co.; "A Brief Memoir of the Late Thomas Bateman, M.D., Physician to the Public Dispensary, Carey Street; and to the Fever Institution, Gray's-Inn, London: Who Died 9th April 1821", (no number), 1822, Stated Second Edition, 24pp, Printed by B. Bensley for J. Butterworth. The only other holding for many of these titles appears to be the National Library of Scotland, with some of these small monographs being bound in a larger volume simply titled "tracts" (presumably of the Religious Tract Society). Many of these titles unreferenced in William Jones' Jubilee Memorial of the Religious Tract Society, meaning that these titles were either uncatalogued, were issued separately from the Society, or were issued by a similar religious society. Others held only by single institution, such as Cambridge. Some of these titles do not appear to be held in any institutions. Individually these titles are quite scarce, some exceedingly so. Extremely desirable collection of tracts bound together, as such..
