About This Item

New York, NY: The Vanguard Press, (1938)., (1938).. Good. AN EARLY PRINTING OF DR. SEUSS "500 HATS" - Quarto, 12 inches high by 9 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in black pictorial boards with a red cloth spine, in an illustrated dust wrapper by Dr. Seuss picturing Bartholomew Cubbins. The edges of the covers are slightly rubbed. The corners of the dust jacket are slightly worn and the head and tail of the jacket's spine are chipped. There are short chips & tiny tears to the edges of the jacket. The top corner of the jacket's front flap is clipped but the price is present, though partially inked out, at the bottom of the flap. [48] unnumbered pages, illustrated with pictorial endpapers and profuse black & white and black, white and red illustrations by Dr. Seuss throughout. A previous owner's gift inscription is penned at the top of the front endpaper. Very good in a good dust wrapper.

An early printing of the book, possibly the second. The $2.50 price on the front flap of the dust wrapper is mostly inked out. (The first printing was $1.50.) The rear flap has no price. The hats on the front endpapers go from small in size to large and from large to small on the rear endpapers. The 1939 book by Dr. Seuss, "The Seven Lady Godivas" is not mentioned on the dust wrapper.
