About This Item

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Hardcover. Very Good/good. Mixed state, folio size, 47 pp., with dust jacket. "The first hat was old and battered, but it had a fine feather stuck in it of which any little boy would be proud..." A favourite Dr. Seuss story, which, of course, "turned out very happily" (n.b., quotes from dust jacket flap).

This volume a mixed state: the hill is in one continuous line spanning the pages (first issue) instead of a broken line and has the correct prices on the jacket flaps. However, the endpapers are not the first issue, which have the large hats on the pastedowns and the small hats on the free endpapers; this copy has the small hats on the pastedowns and the large hats on the free endpapers.

___DESCRIPTION: Red cloth spine, the boards covered with flat paper in black, red, and white, pictorial endpapers in red depicting a swarm of hats, the title page with a small illustration of the hat, illustrated throughout in red and black; folio size (12" by 9 1/8"), unpaginated with the title (and copyright) pages plus 45 pages of text. The dust jacket with a large picture of Bartholomew holding two hats with white and black lettering, the front flap with a summary of the book and the correct first edition price of $1.50, rear flap with review blurbs and "Mulberry Street - $1.00" at the bottom, back panel with a single hat.

___CONDITION: Overall a very good book, the boards clean, a strong text block with solid hinges, the interior pages clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a bit of rubbing to the corners and the bottom edges of the boards, a shallow vertical crease showing on both boards, some dustiness and light sunning to the head and tail of the spine, offsetting to the endpapers, and the text block slightly cocked. The jacket is good only, with light overall wear to the panels and flaps, a water ring on the back panel, considerable wear to the spine with a chip at the bottom approx. two inches, a prior owner affixed cello tape to the jacket verso above the chip where there were closed tears, the same at the head of the spine; we assume the same prior owner attempted to colour some of the white paper along the joints in a red colour which does not exactly match the red of the paper jacket.

___CITATION: Younger & Hirsch no. 22.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

Synopsis

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is a children's book, written by Dr. Seuss and published in 1938. Unlike the majority of Dr. Seuss's books, it is written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. The characters of Bartholomew and King Derwin appear again in a later book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Set in feudal times, the story begins in the Kingdom of Didd, when King Derwin is riding through a street past Bartholomew Cubbins, a poor boy in the market.
