About This Item
NY: Harper and Bros Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1937, xii, 390pp, index, illustrated. Lightly worn, preliminary pages lightly foxed, else G+. Aaron Burr (1756-1836), was one of the more controversial figures in American politics. He distinguished himself in the American Revolution, served in the U. S. Senate, and was vice president under Jefferson. The long-standing bitterness between him and Alexander Hamilton culminated in a duel in 1804, in which Hamilton was fatally wounded. The year 1805 found Burr at the Falls of the Ohio, in Louisville, Kentucky, preparing for a trip down the river in what might have been a plot to seize Mexico from Spain and create his own empire in the West. He claims he was only establishing a colony; and, in reality, the nature of the so-called conspiracy has never been fully understood. The government was unable to prove that he was guilty either of treason or of trying to steal the property of a foreign government, but the fallout over the killing of Hamilton and the suspicion of treasonous activities followed him the rest of his days..
