About This Item

Lyon: Chez Iean Giri, & Bart. Riviere 1668. 16mo. 3 vols. [xxii], 558, [18]; [x], 432, [34]; [xii], 402, [74], [26] pp. Engraved title in volume 1 and Portrait in 3. First 2 vols. are tan brown calf, 3rd vol. is dark speckled calf; all have all edges speckled red, gilt-decorated board edges, raised bands with gilt lettering, gilt decoration and title labels to spine, and gilt device with Order of the Garter motto on boards. History of the French Royal House of Savoy, in French, with the last 83 or so pages of vol. 3 being a list of knights in the court of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy . It's a married set - the third volume is differently bound, but they are all still first editions of the text, and have evidently been together for a long time. These are copies from the library of Gordon Castle in Moray, Scotland, and on the front pastedown bear the bookplate of Cosmo, 3rd Duke of Gordon (1720-52); the majority of the castle's contents were sold in 1938, likely including this set. All volumes are slightly worn and marked and vol. 3 has a little wear and tear to both joints; page edges yellowed, but remarkably clean, although there is very minor evidence of a small bookworm in first pages of vol. 3, barely affecting the text. Bindings very firm. Good condition with interesting history. . Very Good. Full Calf. First Edition. 1668.
