About This Item

Small Temple stamp FPD, Residual pocket removal, BPD, else content appears as unread and unblemished with Fine Yellow/white decorated, cloth covered boards displaying no significant surface/edge wear.

Depicts the true story of Rabbi Isaac Aboab da Fonseca, a Rabbi from Amsterdam who traveled to Recife, Brazil to lead the first Jewish congregation in the Americas. The congregation thrived under his leadership for 14 years.

Kirkus Review: Almost one hundred and fifty years after the initiation of the Spanish inquisition, the Jews of Europe were still under the scrutiny of the Spanish and Portuguese church authorities. Fleeing for freedom to Protestant countries, many found relative freedom in Holland. Such a man was Rabbi Aboab, who, in the third decade of the seventeenth century, became a part of the Dutch colony at Pernambuco, Brazil. A scholarly, dedicated man, he became embroiled in a conflict that raged there between the Dutch and Portuguese, the Portuguese side led by a half caste of enormous wealth and guile. Aboab's bravery on behalf of the Dutch is founded both on loyalty to his protectors, fear for his fellow Jews, and the hope of a more peaceful future. And even when he is forced to return to Holland, he looks forward to the future with a Messianic zeal. An interesting and illuminating perspective of Jewish history and of a Rabbi in a somewhat uncharacteristic environment.
