About This Item

Lisbon, Na officina de Henrique Valente de Oliveira and na Officina de Manoel Lopes Ferreyra, 1665-1698.. FIRST EDITION of volume I; second edition of volume II.. 2 volumes. 4°, mid to later nineteenth-century tree sheep (slight wear at extremities), smooth spines with gilt bands and two crimson leather lettering pieces, gilt titles and volume numbers, marbled endleaves, text-block edges rouged. Large copper engraving on title page of volume I; large woodcut on title page of volume II; woodcut initials headpieces and tailpieces, some fairly large. Title page of volume I slightly shaved at bottom, affecting a few letters of imprint. Very minor wormholes at lower and upper inner margins of about 60 leaves in volume I, in a few cases touching a letter of text. Volume II internally fine. Overall in good to very good condition. Ink inscriptions of "E. Gama // Porto, 20 de Setembro de 1861" and "De Ernesto [?] Vieira // 4345–3002" on rectos of second front free endleaves. (8 ll.), 356 pp. [p. 139 wrongly numbered 136, pp. 318-319 wrongly numbered 320-321]; (2 ll.), 427 pp. *** FIRST EDITION of volume I; second edition of volume II. Poetry and prose by various members of the Academia dos Singulares, founded in 1628 and reactivated from 1663 to 1665. Little is known of the earlier incarnation; the present volumes give a fairly thorough record of its activities from 1663 to 1665. Along with the Academia dos Generosos, the Academia dos Singulares was one of the two most important literary academies in Portugal during the seventeenth century, and was a precursor to the Real Academia de História, founded in 1720, the Real Academia das Sciencias de Lisboa, founded in 1779, as well as several shorter-lived Portuguese and Brazilian academies of the eighteenth century. Among the most famous contributors were António Serrão de Crasto (a "New Christian" who later suffered at the hands of the Inquisition), and Manuel de Gallegos. A significant minority of the verse is in Spanish. The engraving and woodcut on the respective title pages are similar, with each depicting a pyramid-like pile of volumes, with the spine of the base reading "Homero" topped by "Aristoteles", "Vergilio", "Ovidio", "Horacio", "Camões", "Gracilas", "Gongor" and "Lope". The spelling varies slightly for same in the second volume. The title of the second volume begins with Academia singular, and contains a subtitle: Dividida em dezoyto concursos, em que se inclue hum Certamen Academico. *** Arouca A30; A33. Cruz, Tipografia portuguesa do séc. XVII: A colecção da Biblioteca Nacional, I (all published) 18 (for volume I) and 19 (for volume II). Innocêncio I, 4: calling for 358 pp. in volume I, apparently the 1692 edition by Lopes Ferreira. Garcia Peres pp. 6-7. Palha 802 (the 1692 edition of volume I). Pinto de Mattos p. 3. Azevedo-Samodaes 16, lists the 1668 edition of the second volume. Fernandez Thomas 33, lacking pp. 421-422 in vol. 2 (the 1692 edition). Rodrigo Veloso, Segundo escrinio 16–17. Azambuja 7 (the 1692 edition of volume I). Monteverde 20 (the 1692 edition of volume I). Ameal 11 (the 1692 edition of volume I). Not in Goldsmith, Short Title Catalogue of Spanish and Portuguese Books 1601-1700 in the Library of the British Museum. NUC: DLC, NN, MH, MiU.
