Dowding Prankerd was a native of Bristol who emigrated to Adelaide South Australia in 1839, where he worked as a land developer and mine operator, amassing a great fortune. Returning to Bristol in 1872 he bought a large house known as The Knoll in Sneyd Park, Bristol. David Collins (1756-1810) arrived with the First Fleet as Judge-Advocate and was Secretary to Governor Phillip. His book is a valuable account of the early settlement by an educated and observant resident of ten years, and was the last of the Australian foundation books to be published. It contains the most detailed and painstaking of all descriptions of the voyage and first settlement found in any of the early narratives. Volume II, published 4 years after the first contains much valuable information from George Bass's journal which was subsequently lost. Ferguson, Bibliography of Australia, Volume I, page 101, No. 263 and page 134, No. 350; Jonathan Wantrup, Australian Rare Books 1788-1900, pages 348-349; Sotheby's Brooke-Hitching Catalogue, Part I, No.276. Calcutta: Surveyor General of India, 1925. Revised Edition. Linen-backed. Near Fine. Calcutta, India, 1925. Color "heliozincographed" map. Measures 46.5cm x 43cm (18¼" x 17"). Backed with linen as issued (for 3 anna extra). "Published under the direction of Brigadier E. A. Tandy, DSO, Surveyor of India, 1925." Condition: Slight edge toning, old folds. With the rubber-stamp of "Henri Vetch, The French Bookstore," Peking. Detailed topographic map of the territory that would become critical in the CBI - China-Burma-India Theater - during WWII. From a historic-cartographic standpoint, the need for accurate maps in executing Allied wartime logistics cannot have been more vital. Approaches to China by land and sea had been cut off by the Japanese. As a result, the burdensome "Hump" had to be surmounted. The E. A. Tandy-directed survey that generated this map would prove invaluable in negotiating that effort. That this copy was sold by Henri Vetch adds a hint of intrigue. Description:
Babbage was 'engineer, scientist and explorer ... son of Charles Babbage, Cambridge professor of mathematics [and the first computer pioneer], and his wife Georgina, sister of W.W. Whitmore, a founder of South Australia.... In 1856 Babbage was sent north to search for gold as far as the Flinders Ranges. He found none, but discovered the MacDonnell River, Blanchewater and Mount Hopeful. He was the first to dispel the current idea of the impassability of the Lake Torrens "horseshoe" ... [In late 1857 he was] appointed leader of a northern expedition. Babbage left in February 1858 to explore the country between Lakes Torrens and Gairdner, and further to the north and west. His concept of exploration was based on thorough survey, mapping and examination of the country, ideals with which Francis Dutton, commissioner of crown lands, agreed in his instructions and early correspondence. With cumbrous and ingenious equipment Babbage carried out the first part, hampered by bad terrain and lack of water. But he… Read More

Description:
1889 1ed Queensland Cannibals Lumholtz Australia Aborigine Illustrated Maps

The Norwegian, naturalist, anthropologist and explorer Carl Lumholtz spent four years in Australia from 1880. Lumholtz' expedition to Australia was partly paid at the expense of the University of Christiania, to collect zoological and zootomical material for the museums of the University, and research the manners and anthropology of the natives, and among the cannibals. Lumholtz succeeded in securing a large collection of zoological specimens and discovered four new mammals - a tree kangaroo and three opossums, which are depicted in the colored lithographed plates. He collected four new species of mammals with his account of his travels, Among Cannibals, containing detailed observations of Aboriginal life.
This 1889 first edition includes 2 folding colored maps, 29 plates including frontispiece portrait and 4 colored lithographs, and numerous in text illustrations.

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
