London: J. Dodsley. 1770. Volume I (of two), The fifth edition, "with improvements". Octavo, full leather binding, gilt title label, edges tooled gilt, folding map plate frontis, pp xii, 324. Map by Emanuel Bowen. Spine very worn and rubbed, corners lightly bumped and rubbed. Toning of margins of endpapers. The map has a little foxing and a very small hole at the edge (both outside the plate area), otherwise clean. Very good condition. An early edition of "An Account of the European Settlements in America" by Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797) the politician and philosopher. This volume covers "The Discovery of America and the reduction of Mexico and Peru", "The Manners of the Americans" ("Liberty, in its fullest extent, is the darling passion of the Americans" - p. 175), "Spanish America", and "The Portuguese Settlement". Burke believed in commercial liberty and is often considered, especially in the USA, the founder of political conservatism. 5th Edition. Leather.
