About This Item

One of 1 000 copies published.

The play was translated by Adrian Piotrovskii (1898-1937), renowned for his translations of classical Greek plays and for his work as a playwright. He was also known as the "godfather" of the Worker's Youth Theatre (TRAM). Being the son of the prominent Polish classicist Tadeusz Stefan Zieliński, Piotrovskii was deeply influenced by his father's efforts to revive open-air Greek theatre. This influence directly inspired Piotrovskii's participation in street theatre during the years following the October Revolution. Additionally, Piotrovskii was a pupil and disciple of the theatre director Vsevolod Meyerhold. For a period, he collaborated with Meyerhold in the Theatrical department of Narkompros. Furthermore, Piotrovskii maintained a close friendship and professional relationship with the theatre director Sergei Radlov. In 1934, he assumed the role of artistic director at the Sovkino/Leningrad Film Studio. In 1937, he was arrested and executed.
The play is followed by comments about Sergei Radlov (1892-1958), a prominent theatre director who was captured by the German army during evacuation. After the war and his return to the USSR, he faced imprisonment.
It is important to note that in most known copies of this book, Piotrovskii's preface was excised.
