Kirkus Review: Here is an Irish family saga spanning nearly 70 years, from the potato famine to the Easter Rebellion in 1916. There is a large cast of characters set down in the west of Ireland, in Dublin, Paris and London, whose lives are dominated by the politics of the day. Alice MacDonagh is a girl from the Connemara bogs who becomes a lady by marrying Samuel Flaherty, the son of a landlord. She loves Samuel and is devoted to the cause of reform he espouses but she also manages to maintain a steady passion for Morgan Connolly, a Fenian, whose wife she becomes after Samuel is assassinated. In their work for Irish independence they are aided by James Fahy, son of the schoolmaster, who abandons medicine for the British civil service. James is almost thoroughly a fop but he falls under the influence of Parnell and is eventually so overcome at the great man's funeral that he himself dies shortly afterward. This is but one of Mrs. Dillon's many dramatic implausibilities but given the context it seems churlish to carp, for her history is so authentic and her feeling for the land and speech and lifestyles of many classes of people so genuine that one tends to get carried away too. And there's no harm in a little blarney now and then, is there?
