About This Item
Washington DC: National Committee to Defeat the Mundt Bill, 1950. Newsletter. Eight issues of the mimeographed bulletin, mostly 8.5x14 inches, some with uneven toning, otherwise generally very good. Issues present are numbers 1, 3-7, 9 and 11. Also included is a printed letter from August 9, 1950, issued by Committee chairman Jerry J. O'Connell, warning that the Korean crisis could spur passage of the Bill. Updates on efforts to thwart the Mundt Bill, also known as the Subversive Activities Control Bill, which would have required all members of the Communist Party to register with the Attorney General. It passed in the House but failed in the Senate. Senator Pat McCarran took provisions from the Bill and included them in what became the McCarran Internal Security Act, which passed later in 1950.
