About This Item
From Chapter I. The Workshop. - "With a single drop of ink for a mirror, the Egyptian sorcerer undertakes to reveal to any chance comer far-reaching visions of the past. This is what I undertake to do for you, reader. With this drop of ink at the end of my pen I will show you the roomy workshop of Mr. Jonathan Burge, carpenter and builder, in the village of Hayslope, as it appeared on the eighteenth of June, in the year of our Lord 1799."
This is actually a pretty easy read about values, love, seduction, a tragic affair, murder, and more.
Good- condition. Gold cloth over boards with beautiful black text and design impressed on front and spine. Spine also has a gold gilt block. There is some soiling, bumping, edge/corner wear, and back has a few areas where the color has been rubbed? off and the cloth base is visible. Front and back end papers are a light green and white flower print. The front end paper has torn away from the cover in a few spots, but is still attached. The front end paper has an inscription dated 1885, plus another name. Binding appears to be solid, but the page groupings are not even with each other. Closed book page side have some soiling, that does not appear to affect the inside. Text is clean.

Synopsis
Adam Bede, the first novel written by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), was published in 1859. It was published pseudonymously, even though Evans was a well-published and highly respected scholar of her time. The novel has remained in print ever since, and is used in university studies of 19th century English literature.
