About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1859. Softcover. G (Covers are soiled and aged, and spine material is missing, but booklet still holds together well.). Tan paper wraps, held in mylar envelope, 60 pp. Title on cover: An Address delivered in and of the fund for Ball's Equestrian Statue of Washington, 13 May 1859. The text of this speech given by American lawyer, politician, and philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894), at an event that hoped to raise money for erecting an equestrian statue of George Washington in Boston Public Garden. Winthrop covers a lot of ground here, including the topics of the American Revolution and of Washington, but much more than these, of course. The statue, designed by American sculptor Thomas Ball (1819-1911), was finished and installed in 1864.
