About This Item
Washington: Printed by Peter Force, 1827. 61pp. Dbd. Faint institutional duplicate stamp on titlepage. Light foxing and dust soiling. About very good. The first edition of a spirited self-defense of his record by Henry Clay prior to the 1828 presidential election. Clay feared the damage done to his reputation by the 1824 election and his "Corrupt Bargain" with John Quincy Adams, by which his opponents, including Andrew Jackson, claimed that he threw the election to Adams in exchange for being made Secretary of State. In the present work, Clay utilizes numerous depositions and narratives from witnesses in order to demonstrate that his opposition to Jackson was well known, based on principled grounds of statecraft, and existed long before the desire for personal advancement could have motivated his support for Adams. Wise & Cronin note six further editions printed the following year in various places. WISE & CRONIN 194. COLEMAN 2707n. SABIN 13537. SHOEMAKER 28509.
