About This Item

London: London Missionary Society,, 1914. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Yours in sincerity, Bernard Upward". Upward (1873-1944) was a Christian missionary and sinologist. From 1905 to 1927 he lived in Hankou, one of the three towns which form the modern city Wuhan, where he witnessed China's 1911 Revolution first-hand. Upward ends his extraordinary account presciently, describing how, in Hankou, "it was a commonplace to hear the remark, 'The Revolution is over.' No greater mistake could have been made. It had but just begun" (pp. 122-3). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black, decoration to front cover in black and yellow. Photographic frontispiece and 7 photographic plates by the author, double-page map to rear. Spine slightly faded, a little surface loss to outer edges of covers, slight lean to spine, head of spine a little frayed, faint foxing to endpapers, else clean internally. A very good copy.
