Description:
London; (1923): Jonathan Cape. First Edition. Octavo. 350pp., The author writes about the life in the Aran Islands from the point of view of a native. It was written for two reasons. In the first place because Synge wrote a book about one of those islands that irritated me, in as much as he failed to get the personal touch. Secondly, it was written as a courageous attempt to same the Irish novel from the debauched condition of being a political pamphlet or a religious controversy, or wort of all, a literary facsimile of the third rate music hall comedies that draw alcoholic laughter from an audience of very low intelligences. It endeavors to be a faithful picture of the life as I have seen it. Bound in black cloth lettered and ruled in green, spine lettering green, tiny nick to foot, small spot of damp staining to rear board near head and foot. A very good copy in clipped decorative dust jacket lettered in maroon, chipping to spine ends and small chip to spine and damp staining and toning to rear…

Description:
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1925. Octavo. The scarce 1st variant of the 1925 edition in the original blue cloth with the plate showing the Old South Church incorrectly as the place where Patrick Henry gave his famous speech. Early in the process the plate of Boston Harbor was substituted at page 271. Roberts A17. Lawrence wrote this work as a textbook for schools originally under the pseudonym Lawrence H. Davidson since the publisher did not want to be associated with his penchancy for writing about sex. It was more than just another textbook as Mark Kinkead-Weekes has shown the connection between other Lawrence texts and his letters. It is now believed that Lawrence prepared the maps at the rear of the book by himself. A very good copy with fading to spine, little tiny edge tears to head of spine, a few spots of rubbing to joints, corners lightly worn, a bit of bubbling to cloth on upper board.
