About This Item

London: William Mullan & Son, 1879 8vo. later green half-calf gilt (prob. early 20th C) with marbled leaf edges & raised bands (spine uniformly faded to a rich brown hue, extremities & hinges a bit rubbed, bookplate ('Edward Mallinson') & small bookseller's label to front pastedown, occ. spotting, otherwise clean & crisp); pp. viii, 488, with colour frontispiece map, colour folding map (short closed tear to margin), 12 full-page illustrations & 2 text figures. Heavy item (1.2kg), additional postage may be required for international delivery. A very good copy. The author's second book, being an account of Richard and Isabel Burton's tour of India in 1876. Some sections, notably political dialogues on the 'partition of Turkey', are attributed to Richard Burton, though purporting to be Isabel's views. At least some of the cartoons and caricatures illustrating the text are also Richard's, confirming his close involvement in Isabel's work (Lovell 1998, 644). . First Edition. Hard Cover. VG.
