Johnson a British explorer, botanist, artist, colonial administrator, and linguist who traveled widely in Africa and spoke many African languages. He was one of the key players in the Scramble for Africa that occurred at the end of the 19th century.
This expedition achieved an unexpected but significant political result. Under the auspices of the British Agent and Vice Consul of Zanzibar, Sir John Kirk, Johnson effected treaties with the chiefs of several local tribes to accept British protection. These treaties would later form the basis of the foundation of the British East Africa Protectorate of 1895. [Buddenbrooks]
Even though as an explorer he did not make any startling geographical breakthroughs comparable to Speake or his friend Stanley, given his fate was to arrive on the scene as the age had begun to wane, he did through his abilities clarify and expand existing information so that he came to known as Kilimanjaro Harry. [Casada]
Pictorial red cloth stamped in black, white; Spine has been rebacked; bindings are tight and square, though over opened between pp367-68. Text clean, light even toning; the verso of the frontispiece is heavily foxed; moderate shelf handling wear as the spine tips are pushed and rubbed with corners rubbed. 8vo; 9 inches tall; viii, 572, 36 (ads); gravure frontispiece portrait, wood-engraved vignette title page, 6 maps 2 are folding in color), 14 plates, 78 wood-engraved illustrations by the author in the text.
