"The field of race relations in South Africa - what the various groups thought of each other - is a much neglected aspect of history. This study attempts to trace the relationship of the English with the Afrikaners between 1795 and 1854, and provides the basis upon which the Englishman (both in South Africa and Britain), arrived at his conclusions. The author also tries to give the reasons for the division among the English, not only in their opinion of the Afrikaners, but also as related to colonial events as they unfolded. An attempt is made to illustrate that primarily the relationship between the English and the Afrikaner was the conflict between liberalism and conservatism and not simply a barrier dividing the 'colonial south' from the 'republican north' as was so often stated." .
