About This Item
(Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball Publishers, 2008) 9781868422623. Author's signed presentation inscription to title page. 232 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xiv + 287, incl. index. Near fine condition. "Andrew Feinstein became an active supporter of the African National Congress in the 1980s, and campaigned energetically for the party in the first democratic elections. He was elected to parliament where he rose swiftly through the ranks, earning the label 'Mr Clean' for his unstinting work against corruption. But his feelings of euphoria at being part of the new South Africa slowly soured. Disappointed by the constant jockeying for power and the views held by President Thabo Mbeki on HIV/AIDS, Feinstein's disillusionment grew as he sought unsuccessfully to investigate the corruption surrounding the infamous arms deal. Isolated from his former comrades, some of them senior members of government, Feinstein was ultimately forced to choose between his principles and the party he had so admired. After the Party reveals the explosive details of what really happened in the arms deal: the personalities, the cover-up and the corruption. It also provides insight into current South African politics and battles within the ANC." .
