London: B.T. Batsford, Ltd., [1947].. viii,184pp. plus plates and photographs. Large octavo. Medium brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Cloth a bit sunned and hand-soiled, but about very good and sound, without dust jacket. First edition of this extensively illustrated survey of UK architecture associated with Robert Adam (1728-1792). Inscribed and signed by the author on the title-page: "For Nicholas Guppy James Lees-Milne 10.8.50." The rear pastedown is covered with extensive pencil notes, presumably in the hand of the recipient (possibly the Trinidad-born explorer, writer and environmentalist, 1925- 2012).
