Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1962. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 256 pages, with index, bibliography, nine maps, 102 b&w illustrations (art reproductions) on plates. Medium octavo (6-1/4" x 9-3/4"), dark green cloth, rubbed gilt lettering in red insets on spine, little shelf wear, faded red topstain, page-turning soil and small water spots to fore-edge, foxing to end papers. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff and date 1963 written on ffep, his underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately 140 pages.
Synopsis
This magisterial volume follows the death of ancient traditions, the triumph of new classes, and the emergence of new technologies, sciences, and ideologies, with vast intellectual daring and aphoristic elegance. Part of Eric Hobsbawm's epic four-volume history of the modern world, along with The Age of Capitalism, The Age of Empire, and The Age of Extremes.
