SYNOPSIS: Gilbert, author of 20 other books, recounts 11 missions by the U.S. Air Force, from the pursuit of Pancho Villa in Mexico in 1916 to the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Gilbert tells the stories of historic flights over Tokyo, Ploesti, the Himalayan Mountains, and Hiroshima in World War II; the 15-month Berlin Airlift in 1948; and missions in Korea and Vietnam. Gilbert offers a wealth of detail: the types of planes, their speeds, the number of flights, the number of bombs and amount of gasoline they carried, and the routes taken. He also offers historic background on the missions, identifies the crewmen, and gives the number of casualties in each of these operations. Some readers may take issue with such terms as "bravest heroes," since the raids on Tokyo and Hiroshima left hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians dead and injured and more than a million were left homeless.
