About This Item

Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Easton, Maryland: The Pushin Group and The Timkov Collection, 1999. Hardcover. NF/VG+ but for ex-lib. sticker on lower spine of dj. In English. Balck cloth boards with grey spine lettering, Dark green DJ with color illustration; 167 pp.; over 150 color plates and illustrations. From the dust jacket: Founded in 1884 in the northern province of Tver, the Academic Dacha ["Akademichka"] initially served as a country refuge for impoverished or ailing artists from the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. The area increasingly became a favorite with students and professors who came to paint landscapes in the open air. Closed in 1917, after the Bolshevik revolution, the Academic Dacha got a second life in 1948. The setting so appealed to certain artists, they spent the greater part of their lives there, purchasing small country homes (dachas) nearby. Such an artist was the brilliant and prolific Nikolai Timkov, one of the most important Russian Impressionist painters of the twentieth century. Over 150 color reproductions trace the evolution of uniquely Russian plein air painting through the works of Timkov and his Akademichka contemporaries.
