About This Item
Whitehead Morris, Alexandria., 1922. First edition. Octavo. 227 pages. Maps and plans (two folding). Map in pocket at rear. Boards. This is one of the copies mentioned by Kirkpatrick in which the plan facing page 144 has been misplaced to face page 44. A large proportion of this first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire. From the library of Sibyl and Arthur Colefax with their nameplate on the front free endpaper. Sibyl Colefax was an interior designer and socialite in the first half of the twentieth century. She supposedly served as the model for Mrs Beaver in Evleyn Waugh's A Handful of Dust and Mrs Aldwinkle in Aldous Huxley's Those Barren Leaves. It is probable this copy was acquired before the Great Crash which cost the Colefaxes most of their fortune and which led to Sibyl's embarking upon her profession.Spine a bit tanned and rubbed. Very good indeed.
