About This Item
Bournbrook, Birmingham: C. H. Foyle of Boxfoldia Ltd., 1940. Originally printed for private circulation and not for sale. Hardcover. Very good. 55 p. 25 cm. 12 full-page b&w illustrations by the author. Grey paper-covered boards with tan cloth spine. Mild wear to covers, corners bumped. Front endpaper has label of former owner, small pencil marks and slight soiling. Moderate foxing on page opposite preface.
Arthur Wragg exploited the "Alice" legend to create this criticism of wartime Britain's paper rationing. A socialist and pacifist, Wragg was also an illustrator, and therefore created his own pictures to accompany the text. The work condemns censoring, regulations, quotas, bureaucracy, economists, etc. Interesting, but the reference to Alice smoking a cigarette on page 11 may not satisfy modern taste!
