An uncorrected proof edition. This copy comes with two, typed, signed letters by Virginia Caldwell and one from Peachtree Publishers. Two typed, signed letters by the author's wife Virginia are included. The typed letters are on Virginia M. Caldwell's personal note paper.
The first letter typed from Scottsdale, Arizona is dated November 29, 1986 and reads:
Dear Mr. Glenn: The Christmas rush has already started at our post office and lines are long and slow moving...making it difficult for me to pick up mail in the hurry necessary with a husband at home on oxygen.
I'd like to suggest that you hold any other books that you have until the holiday congestion is over and things calm down again. It might be safer, too, as far as loss is concerned. It is just as easy for me to handle a larger package if you wish to put more books together at one time.
My husband is responding to chemotherapy and improving constantly and I think his hand writing will be more steady as tome goes on and strength returns, and we're optimistic enough to think that it will. We wish you a very good and successful holiday season and good luck adding to your book collection. [handwritten] Sincerely yours, Virginia Caldwell"
The second letter is dated March 16, 1987 and typed on "VMC" personal note paper and reads:
"Dear Mr. Glenn: It had been very much on my mind to write and tell you that the lines at the post office are back to spring season normal and I'm "collecting" again at the front "window", but the thing I have least time for these days is letter writing and the piles of unanswered letters grows higher and higher on my desk. I'm dashing this off to you, thinking that you might want to send your books soonest, because I'm not sure how much longer my husband will feel like signing things..right now it is good for him to keep his morning desk hours...... And he continues to astonish his doctors with determination and fortitude. Thank you for sending the Stanley Lindberg review. With best wishes Sincerely, Virginia Caldwell."
A typed, signed letter from the Peachtree Publishers dated November 21, 1986 is addressed to Dr. Lewis P. Simpson Southern Review Louisiana State Univ. The publisher is sending this advanced reading copy to Dr. Simpson and briefly describes Caldwell's "brilliant career". It is signed by Chuck Perry Vice President and Executive Editor.
Also included is a promotional card and a typed memo note (unsigned) from Erskine Caldwell to Walter Glenn.
Erskine Caldwell born 1903 died on April 11, 1987 less than a month after the second letter from his wife was typed.
