About This Item

Whitmore & Fenn, [London], first edition, second issue, 1830,. Modern half calf and marbled boards, gilt spine-title, 8vo, 20 cm,. 47 pp extra-illustrated with a wood-engraved portrait frontispiece (mounted) and a leaf from an 18th-century bookseller's advertisement, annotated interleaves throughout,. Approximately 240 entries. Rare. Of two auction records found for the work, one is for this same copy in 1981, and the other -also for an 1830 issue - was at the sale of Wilberforce Eames' library in 1906. This is a second issue of what is,we believe, the first specialized catalogue of Defoe's works: The British Library has a copy which differs only in having the title-page dated 1829 rather than 1830. The library of F R Atkinson, whose booklabel is present in this volume, comprised "upwards of 10,000 volumes" and was sold in 1858. The inserted bookseller advertisement advertises books of "John Sprint at the Blew Bell in Little Britain" and of "T Ballard at the Rising Sun in Little-Britain". Interleaved throughout with many annotations (chiefly 19th century) on the interleaves and text, numerous clippings from bookseller's catalogues pasted in. Initial blank annotated 'The additions in MS to this catalogue are by the late F. R. Atkinson Esq., Jas. [?]Cropley', Atkinson's embossed oval booklabel ("Oak House, Pendleton") re-imposed to front pastedown, ownership inscription (dated 1973) and bibliographical annotations of Brent Gration-Maxfield to front pastedown and front free endpaper respectively, his pencilled instructions for binding at the rear. A few blue-pencil underlines to the text, otherwise Good.
