João da Câmara Leme Homem de Vasconcellos (1829-1902), a native of Funchal, received a medical degree from Montpellier. According to the Nobreza de Portugal e do Brasil, II, 477, he was created Conde de Canavial in 1880. However, this 1884 publication refers to him as Visconde. He wrote a number of scientific and literary works, including a translation of Dumas, and founded the newspapers A Liberdade, O Distrito do Funchal and Luz. One of the founders of a sugar factory in Madeira, he also wrote on aspects of sugar production and other agricultural matters.
